After more than a decade committed to the circulation of short-films, the Belo Horizonte Short Film Festival, in its eleventh edition, rethinks its paradigms facing the increasing transformations in the audiovisual scenario. Searching for conceptual and reflexive maturing, the event tries to initiate, this year, a reformulation of its insertion model. Our ambition is to propose a festival seen as a place for meeting, reflection, exchange and diffusion of what is produced of more innovative and exciting in the contemporary audiovisual.
The overlapping of cinema and plastic arts, the vanguards, the neovanguards and the new cinephilia are some of the topics raised by the exhibitions and debates in this year’s edition. A group of curators was invited to participate in this process, proposing programs for this current edition and raising questions regarding the festival's profile. Programmers from international film festivals, know by their coherent curatorial profile - Locarno, Vila do Conde, Oberhausen and Bafici - were invited to exhibit mini-exhibitions with films of prominence from the last editions of their festivals and to sit in on the round tables. Together, the exhibitions and the activities here proposed will try to amplify the range of dialogue of the festival, always having in mind the idea of a more authorial and disquiet cinema, which contributes to deepen the experience with the art of our time. The moment is favorable for the renewal of the festival's model: after six editions produced by the Centro de Estudos Cinematográficos de Minas Gerais (CEC) - Center Of Cinematographic Studies of Minas Gerais - the event is now back to being produced by the Department of Cinema from Fundação Clóvis Salgado (Clóvis Salgado Foundation)/ Palacio das Artes, also responsible for the programming of Cine Humberto Mauro, the only non-commercial exhibition room of Belo Horizonte. The Diretoria de Audiovisual da Secretaria de Estado de Cultura (Audiovisual Board of Director from the State Secretary of Culture) was responsible for the coordination of this special edition of the festival, with the responsibility to reformulate its structure and point, with the help of the invited curators, new paths for its future. It's expected of the public that they share in our proposal, coming to the exhibitions and participating in the debates, contributing to the success and continuity of this festival. Daniel Queiroz |
